A strategic mapping of disused industrial areas and a renewed commitment to sustainable investment were at the center of a public event hosted by the Region of Tuscany. Organized in collaboration with ANCI Toscana, the Directorate for Urban Planning and Sustainability, and the Invest in Tuscany office, the event focused on revitalizing Tuscany’s industrial heritage.
During the meeting, the Region presented the results of a detailed survey of around 2,500 disused or underutilized sites, identifying 300 viable properties—150 of which are ready to be repositioned on the market. These sites are located across the region and represent a concrete opportunity to attract national and international investors, especially in the context of urban regeneration and reuse of former public or healthcare buildings.
“We’re not starting from scratch,” said President Eugenio Giani. “This work enables us to offer a structured portfolio to investors, supporting local economies, creating jobs, and reducing land consumption by reactivating areas rich in untapped potential.”
The initiative promotes a sustainable development model driven by inter-institutional collaboration and is already drawing interest from financial stakeholders for its credibility, environmental focus, and innovation.
Several successful regeneration cases were presented, including:
- H2 Era Green Valley, Europe’s first zero-impact circular economy hub;
- Ex Fornaci Mondani, blending heritage and community;
- Dievole’s new winery, built in a reclaimed quarry in Castagneto Carducci.
These examples show that industrial reuse can be both viable and advantageous.
Speakers included Federico Parma (H2 Era), Stefano Capurso (Tenuta Meraviglia – Dievole), Oliviero Giusti (BioChemical System International), and Alessandro Santarossa (Corde Architects). The event was coordinated by Filippo Giabbani (Regione Toscana) and Simone Gheri (ANCI Toscana), with closing remarks by Paolo Tedeschi, Director for Territorial Competitiveness.
Tuscany thus reaffirms its commitment to turning disused spaces into engines of sustainable growth.
