Montopoli (Pisa) – The first phase of development for the new logistics platform of Conad del Tirreno has been completed last June in Montopoli: the expansion over 1,800 msq of surface area and a height of 28 metres gives shape and substance to a hub which, when in operation, will become the largest logistics hub in Central Italy for Conad, one of the main Italian supermarket chain: a model of efficiency with reduced environmental impact.

“The Montopoli platform, once in operation, will enable the distribution of over 65 million packages per year on the sales network, of which 40 million of grocery products and the remaining of fresh produce”, states the General Director of Conad del Tirreno Fiorella Bianchi. “The project was born from the desire to make the hub a facility of logistics excellence, in which efficiency is combined with quality for the consumer”.

Subsequently, the redevelopment phase of the industrial area will be completed by 2020, with the creation of services aimed at further facilitating traffic mobility, of rest areas and carparks for heavy goods vehicles and employee vehicles, and green areas with trees. Essentially a valuable landscaping project to reduce the environmental impact on an area with an industrial vocation.

The overall investment destined for the new Montopoli logistics hub amounts to over 20 million euros. The creation of a veritable “citadel” of logistics for Conad del Tirreno will have positive repercussions on the territory, including from an economic point of view, on linked industries and on employment. When in operation, the new logistics system will in fact employ over 500 people. Furthermore, from an environmental point of view the new strategy will remove the need for approximately 3,500 journeys taken each year by heavy goods vehicles to transport goods between the two sorting centres, with a significant reduction in costs and CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.
