The universities of Pisa and Rome Sapienza are the best in Italy according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (www.shanghairanking.com) compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2013. This was revealed in a note released by the University of Pisa, according to which the 2 universities "are the best among the Italians and are positioned between the 101st and 150th or place in the world, ahead of Milan and Padua positioned between 151st and 200th, and those of Bologna, Florence, Turin and Milan Polytechnic, located between the 201st and 300th place."
