CONTSHIP IS READY TO INVEST IN LIVORNO

The Chairman of the Italian branch of the Hamburg-based multinational has agreed to include the Port of Livorno among the Italian ports of his network which already includes the ports of Gioia Tauro, Cagliari, La Spezia and Marina di Ravenna.

Contship is betting on both Livorno for the European Platform and the BOT formula, and Marina di Ravenna by expanding the new Trattopoli terminal.

This is how the European-based shipping multinational wants to use logistics and ports as the key for Italy's economic recovery.

Over the next 5 years Contship is planning to invest more than €530 million in Livorno and Marina di Ravenna. The chairman has stated that, with the construction of the two terminals by 2012, this figure will reach €832 million. Of the above mentioned €530 million, €200 million will be used to set up Livorno's European Platform.

An extra €30 million euros will be spent to enhance Sogemar for the railway and intermodal activities linked to the network. The group's objective is to handle at least 11.3 million of TEUs in Italian ports by 2012.

According to Contship Italia, the European Platform will be developed in three phases, the first being completed by 2012 and involving the transformation of the two sediment tanks, of which only one is ready, to create yards and to support the quay's front area.
