IN PISA TO SAVE VOICE AND NECK

IN PISA TO SAVE VOICE AND NECK

ANSA) - PISA 8 April - A wholly Italian technique developed by the University of Pisa for thyroid surgery has arrived in the United States. The technique reduces the risks of damage to the voice and preserves the beauty of the neck.

Minimally Invasive Video-Assisted Thyroid resection or MIVAT, has been developed by Professor Paolo Miccoli, Director of the Department of General Surgery of Pisa's Hospital, and by Professor Rocco Bellantone, Director of the Operational Unit of Endocrine Surgery of Rome's Gemelli Polyclinic.

Thanks to a small cut, just 1.5 centimetres, benign and malignant nodules and carcinomas as well as small goiters can be operated on.

Tested for about 10 years, the technique has been validated by the scientific community and is already being used by many centres. It has now gone across the pond and is used in US operating theatres.

The use of the ultrasonic scalpel will reduce the likelihood of injuring patients' voice which can be affected by damages to the recurrent nerve and inflamed neck tissues. Post-operative recovery is faster and complications are lower. (ANSA)
