ECO-ENERGY: TWO NEW RESEARCH CENTRES ON RENEWABLES IN TUSCANY

(ANSA) - LARDERELLO (nr. PISA), 7 March - Two new centres of excellence for research will open in Tuscany: one in Larderello, the first in Italy to study geothermal power, and the second one in Monterotondo Marittimo (nr. Grosseto) that will focus on renewable energies.

Larderello's Centre of Excellence on Geothermal Power (CEGL) is unique in Italy and intends to be a point of reference for studies, researchers and institutions dealing with energy generated by the earth. Seventeen scholarship holders from the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies and the National Research Council (Cnr) are already working at the CEGL. Thanks to their appointment, lasting one and a half years, they are creating a true data bank on geothermal energy.

The International Centre for Transfer of Technological Innovation on Renewable Energies (CITT) is based in a magnificent restored farm in the countryside near Monterotondo Marittimo. Some of the projects the working group in Monterotondo will shortly focus on include studies on concentration photovoltaic systems to test new technologies that can make installation of photovoltaic panels more cost- and energy-effective.

The two centres, created with regional funds, have cost 1.1 million euros. They have been set up under the auspices of two provisional Associations whose members are the University, the National Research Council, the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies, the National Research Council of Rome, and the Municipalities of Pomarance and Monterotondo Marittimo.
