First Quantum Centre To Study Tomorrow's PCs To Be Set Up In Pisa

A prize that looks to the future and a unique project in Italy aiming at creating a European Research Centre to study the potential and impact of quantum computers on the development of future hardware and software. The Centre will be established in Pisa and will be coordinated by the Scuola Normale, winner of the IBM Faculty Award for the Quantum Information Competence Centre. This project provides for long-term cooperation on quantum IT-related issues. This international prize, that has been announced today, is given to universities developing leading edge IT-related research projects. This time the prize has been assigned to the Scuola Normale and the Polytechnic of Milan, the only Italian universities that have been recognised out of 246 international projects.
The Centre will be coordinated by Pisa's Scuola Normale and will involve businesses, research centres and university institutes. The purpose of the Centre is to study the development of software and hardware associated with quantum computers, in practice tomorrow's computers and the protagonists of the next IT revolution.
"We have been carrying out this type of research for about 10 years now" states professor Rosario Fazio who will coordinate the project on behalf of the Italian partners together with IBM software development lab in Rome. This field is undergoing enormous growth: "By making computer components increasingly small, totally new logics have to be applied and this is where quantum mechanics comes into play" explains professor Fazio.
In a few years time, the size of computer components will be very small and comparable to the size of atoms. Will they work as the "classic" components? Science is trying to come up with an answer to this question. "In this field, there are new computing rules that make the most of quantum mechanics and this is what we are dealing with here in Pisa".
The project will be part of an existing cooperation agreement between IBM and the Insitut de Ciences Fotoniques (ICFO) in Spain.
