European Union: 1 billion euros to Tuscany to boost its economy and infrastructures

FLORENCE, 3rd August

Tuscany will receive 1.126 billion euros from the European Union in order to strengthen its economy and improve its infrastructures. As explained in a note prepared by the Regional Government of Tuscany, this allocation follows the European Commission's approval of the Regional Operational Programme 'Regional Competitiveness & Employment' for 2007-2013 (Por Creo 2007-2013), drafted by the Regional authorities. The programme will be financed through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

One of its main objectives is the consolidation of the production system through aid to research, technology transfer and entrepreneurship, as well as the introduction of measures within the cultural and tourism sectors aimed at enhancing urban areas and increasing the competitiveness of metropolitan systems. A substantial amount of resources will be devoted to the energy sector and the creation of plants which will use renewable sources of energy. This programme will also be used to part-finance transport-related projects including the tramway currently being built in Florence.
