Toscana Promozione-Invest in Tuscany, with the support of A.T. Kearney, the global management consulting Firm, has performed a specific analysis concerning all Life Science sectors in Tuscany: pharmaceuticals, bio-tech and bio-medical.
The objective of the project was to introduce to both financial and industrial investors several potential investment opportunities in Tuscany, which have been previously identified and selectively screened.
On 16th April 2009 a workshop with this aim, was held at Toscana Promozione premises in Florence.

- Strong presence of Universities and research centers:
Tuscany presents a notable concentration of universities and research centers, as into: CNR National Reseach Center (Institute of Clical Physiology, Istitute of Neuroscience, Institute of Biomedical Technologies, Institute for advanced studies; University of Pisa, Florence and Siena; ITT Instituto Toscano Tumori; Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa; CERM Magnetic Resonance Center; LENS European Laboratory for Non- Linear Spectroscopy; CRISMA Inter- University Research Center for Advanced Medical Systems; Biomedical Hub of Careggi (Florence); Sant'Anna Valdera Hub, Biomedical Center "Le Scotte" (Siena).

The Tuscan Health System is one of the best managed in Italy, thus favoring a collaborative mood between authorities and industry.
- Tuscany has the best surplus per capita, offering a high overall expenditure and a good quality of care.
- Regional Health Carew system is efficiently managed trought 1) a careful monitoring of the total health expenditure which allows a limited per capita deficit, 2) an appropriate allocation to the health system of the total resources available in Tuscany, 3) an efficient drug reimbursement system.
- Well developed Life sciences industry:
Tuscany has 201 companies in the life science sector generating 3.4 Euro BLN. sales and employing over 13.000 people.
- Pharmaceutical industry in Tuscany accounts for 64 companies and 9.083 employees, with the largest six ones accounting for abourt 65%.
-Pharmaceutical companies are concentrated in three tuscan provinces, with major focus on vaccines, haematology, anaesthesiology, pneumology and toxicology.
- Bio-tech firms are mostly concentrated in the provinces of Firenze and Siena, they are mainly active in red bio-tech segment (about 75%), then in green and white segment (10% for everyone) and finally a 5% in bio-informatics field.
- in Tuscany exist a strong presence of bio-medical company, with small & medium entreprises generating half of total revenues.
- Supporting environment:
Companies investing in Tuscany can benefit from a favourable and supposting environment, as the availability of public funs form the Region and Equity Funds focussing on Life science, as three technology parks for establishing a new business presence, as 10 business incubators that provide support to ventures during the start up phase, and, last but not least, as low costs of labour, one of the most competitive in western Europe.
