Infrastructures
Tuscany occupies a barycentric position in relation to Italy and the Mediterranean; in addition to which it is endowed with a good system of infrastructures.
The road network
The total length of the regional road network comes to 11,375 kilometres, and extends over three main arteries. The first consists of the central North-South corridor (the A1 motorway), which connects the region to Milan and Rome. The second is the coastal route, designated European Corridor E80, which serves the main regional ports and Pisa Airport. The third interconnects with the previous two, connecting Florence to the coast.
The rail network
The territory of the Tuscan region is served by a rail network stretching over 1,416 km. Composed of two parallel main North-South axes, corresponding respectively to the coastal route (Rome-Grosseto-Pisa-Genoa) and the North-South route (Bologna-Florence-Rome); the latter has the added benefit of the High Speed Rail Network. Connections across the most urbanised areas of the regional territory are assured by two East-West lines.
Airports
There are two international airport infrastructures in Tuscany: Florence Airport, which is principally a city airport serving business clients and tourists and Pisa Airport which, because of its position at the centre of a system of infrastructures (port, motorways, railways), could become a potential successful hub for freight transport.
Ports
The port of Leghorn, the region's main port, has built up a maritime traffic that now handles 25mln/tons a year, involving 5,000 ships, serving all the major ports world-wide. Because of its size, the port can accommodate ships of all type and handle freight of many different kinds, even exceptionally large cargoes, such as outsize manufactured goods and heavy carpentry.
The port of Marina di Carrara handles over three million tons of freight, of which 78% is stone of various kinds, and it is connected to an intermodal centre situated in the immediate vicinity, connected in turn with the Tyrrhenian railway line.
The port of Piombino handles around eight/nine million tons of freight, most of which consists of iron and steel products, and it is also one of the main Italian passenger ports.
