With a population of 3.6 million inhabitants (6% of the Italian population), the region is in a strategic barycentric position in both Italy and the Mediterranean area, thus ensuring high accessibility of goods and people.

5th Italian Region for intra -muros research and development expenditure (2003) , Tuscany is world renowned for its natural beauty as well as its artistic and cultural legacy. 6 World Heritage sites have been identified in Tuscany by UNESCO (the historical centres of Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Pienza; Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa; Val d'Orcia).

A high standard availability of skills is ensured due the 3 university Centres in the region (Florence, Pisa and Siena).
